Mr. Dale Hutchins is a 63-year-old warehouse worker, 84 kg, paid by the hour, scheduled for an elective open right inguinal hernia repair at the hospital's outpatient surgery center. The plan is intravenous sedation with local anesthetic from the surgeon. His first date was canceled two months ago because he had no escort.

He is recently widowed, lives alone, and has no family nearby. He came by bus and tells the nurse he will take a rideshare home. The surgeon has said she can do the repair with local anesthetic alone if needed. The hospital social worker is available until 4 p.m.

Your task: discuss the options for today with Mr. Hutchins and agree on a plan.
